DivaWhispers was fortunate to be able to see Mr. Bill Cosby live. He was incredible. At 74 years old he still managed to be as funny and as clever as these new comedians. He talked about Saturday at The Winspear Opera House in Dallas, TX was women and wives, parenting and grandparenting, youth and aging — exactly what the sold out crowd paid to hear.
He sat in a chair, dressed in a long-sleeve T-shirt, sweats and Crocs and flanked by a small table, bottle of water and a box of Kleenex. Often rambling as he reminisced, he doesn’t tell jokes with an impressive ease that must be the envy of his fellow comics. He employed his trademark pregnant-pause delivery, exaggerated facial expressions and one-man dialogues. He started off with a video of him interviewing children and older adults and getting candid responses. That was a hilarious way too begin the evening.

He even involved the crowd in his routine. He said this was dedicated to the mothers for Mothers Day (although it had already passed). He asked “How painful is childbearing? I heard it was the most painful thing on earth” all the mothers screamed out yes it is, Bill asks a lady in the audience “How many kids you have?” She replied “two” and Bill jokes “If it hurts so bad, why did you have another one?“ Ha..the audience went into a roar.
He made a lot of jokes about wives and marriage like “Chess isn’t about war; it’s about husband and wife,” Cosby said. “The queen flies all over the place; the king cowers trying to stay out of check.” He noted that a groom gets to surround himself with his best friends because “it’s the last time he’ll ever see them.” After a deserved laugh, he added, “Unless they’re pallbearers.”
His many stories about couples had everyone looking at each other and agreeing. Mr. Cosby spent nearly 100 minutes entertaining a crowd like they were family. And we ate it up.
Bill’s jokes were effortless and felt like I was just sitting around listening to a great storyteller that made me laugh and took me back home to my childhood. He joked about things like the difference between a beating and a whooping, his response to his daughter talking back, his wife having all the power and of course mothers and our struggles.
Those who whine that comedy can’t be pure unless there’s cursing and anger need to make sure and see him live. It’s about the laughs, not how they are earned. And very few have earned more than Mr. Bill Cosby.
